Continuous casting is a critical process in steel manufacturing, involving the flow of molten steel through a series of stages including ladle, tundish, and mold. This study aims to analyze the various process abnormalities that occur during slab casting, particularly focusing on anomalies associated with ladle and tundish operations. A statistical analysis was conducted using data collected from a steel plant, which included observations of slab surface defects. The research identified common deficiencies such as the change of submerged entry nozzles (SEN), tundish exchanges, and instances of steel flow without ladle shrouds. The results indicated a notable correlation between these abnormalities and the quality of the slabs produced, some of which were downgraded to commercial grades or subjected to scarffing processes. It was revealed that specific abnormalities, like the SEN exchange and first slab of tundish events, were significant predictors of surface defects in the slabs. Overall, the findings stress the importance of monitoring these process abnormalities to enhance product quality in continuous casting operations.
