Abstract

Language:

The depletion of easily milled (free-milling) gold deposits has driven the mining industry to increasingly rely on refractory ores, particularly those containing arsenic (As)- and antimony (Sb)-bearing sulfides, for future gold (Au) production. Today, Au derived from refractory ores accounts for roughly one-third of global output, and this share is expected to increase further. This review discusses hydrometallurgical strategies currently employed for gold recovery from these challenging ores, detailing the mechanisms involved, the existing challenges in the processes, and the emerging trends within the field. A comprehensive examination of various methods, including bioleaching and cyanide alternatives, is presented to highlight their efficiency and sustainability. The review also emphasizes the need for innovative approaches to enhance gold recovery rates and minimize the environmental impact associated with arsenic and antimony during processing. It concludes by calling for further research and development to overcome the existing limitations and improve gold extraction techniques from refractory materials.
