Abstract

Language:

In the context of increasing antibiotic resistance, this study investigates the potential of microbial consortia to inhibit drug-resistant bacteria. The objective was to analyze how these consortia affect the growth and survival of various strains of resistant bacteria. Methodologically, we conducted in vitro experiments using multiple combinations of bacterial species isolated from clinical specimens, along with various nutrient media. Growth inhibition was measured through standard microbiological techniques, including the determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) and graphical analyses of bacterial growth curves. Results revealed that certain microbial consortia exhibited significant antagonistic effects on drug-resistant strains, leading to reduced viability and substantial growth inhibition compared to single bacterial treatments. Notably, consortia comprising Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species demonstrated the most pronounced effects against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). These findings suggest that the utilization of microbial consortia may offer a viable alternative strategy to combat antibiotic-resistant infections, thus contributing to innovative approaches in treating resistant bacterial infections.
