Empresa Minera de Mantos Blancos S.A. operates two copper mines in Chile: Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde. This study aims to define the leach processes suitable for each ore type by conducting extensive metallurgical testwork during the feasibility study of both projects. The methodology involved the selection of a combination of heap and dump leaching for Mantoverde, while a modified vat leach operation was implemented for Mantos Blancos. Results indicated that improvements in the Mantos Blancos vat leaching process increased the capacity to 9,500 t/d by 1991, though challenges arose in maintaining the desired copper dissolution levels, with the solution exhibiting higher impurity balances affecting the SX plant. Additionally, Mantoverde's irrigation rates did not meet expectations, leading to increased leaching times necessary for optimal copper extraction. Overall, this research highlights the complexities of leaching operations in different mining contexts and underscores the need for tailored metallurgical approaches based on specific ore characteristics.
