Abstract

Language:

The present paper addresses a lichen calibration with physical monitors, specifically dust gauges, to enable their use as biomonitors of atmospheric deposition from fugitive dust emissions of mining activity. The study employs linear regressions between Cu values in lichens, directional dust gauges, and precipitation, showing strong correlations. The findings indicate that biomonitoring is a cost-effective and reliable method for assessing air quality, allowing for extensive and flexible sampling. Additionally, a Gaussian dispersion model was utilized, integrating lichen and meteorological data along with technological parameters of the mine, to achieve the spatial characterization of the regional air pollution impact. Preliminary results from this model are evaluated against the data obtained from the lichen monitoring, demonstrating the potential of integrating biological indicators in pollution studies.
