This study aimed to investigate the absorption capabilities of various micro-organisms for cadmium from aqueous solutions, focusing particularly on Arthrobacter nicotianae. We tested 51 different micro-organism strains and found that specific Gram-positive bacteria and actinomycetes exhibited significant cadmium absorption, with A. nicotianae demonstrating the highest uptake, exceeding 800 µmol of cadmium per gram of dry weight. The experimental conditions highlighted how solution variables such as pH, cadmium concentration, and cell density influenced absorption rates, which were found to be rapid. Additional insights were provided on the effectiveness of immobilized A. nicotianae cells in a column system, where cadmium adsorption and subsequent desorption with a Na2CO3 solution were illustrated. It was also noted that the presence of other metal ions could interfere with cadmium absorption, indicating a need for pre-removal strategies. Overall, the study contributes valuable data to the understanding of microbial cadmium uptake and its implications for environmental remediation efforts.
