This paper provides an overview of best practice examples for the reuse of wastewater in agricultural irrigation globally, addressing the challenges and solutions in implementation. The objective is to highlight effective treatment methods and irrigation strategies applicable in various contexts, especially concerning different crop types and regional specifics. Methodology includes the assessment of advanced treatment processes suitable for both restricted and unrestricted irrigation, alongside case studies from different regions that have successfully integrated wastewater reuse into their agricultural systems. Results indicate that while technologies can achieve water quality approaching drinking water standards in certain instances, their application differs significantly based on local economics and agricultural practices. For restricted irrigation, secondary treatment followed by detention proves adequate in most cases, whereas unrestricted irrigation of edible crops necessitates the implementation of more sophisticated treatment systems to comply with microbial safety standards. The findings suggest tailored approaches are essential for the effective reuse of treated wastewater, considering the specific agricultural and hydrological conditions of the target areas.
