Advances in materials performance require the development of composite systems, of which coated materials are one form. The objective of this review is to summarize the importance of protective coatings in improving abrasion and corrosion resistance, particularly in severe environments. Methodologically, the review discusses various coating systems, their performance in high-temperature applications, and their role in critical industries such as coal gasification, waste incineration, and power generation. Results indicate that the effectiveness of thick coatings in resisting high temperature corrosion in diesel and gas turbine engines, along with their use in nuclear power systems, highlights the growing significance of this industry. The review also addresses challenges related to substrate compatibility, adhesion, porosity, and the overall design of substrate and coating systems, emphasizing the need to integrate all features to optimize function and cost efficiency.
