During the production of steel from Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), large amounts of by-product called EAF flue dust is generated, which is comprised mainly of Zn (41.5 % w.t.). This study aimed to optimize the recovery of Zn from flue dust using sodium hydroxide as the leaching medium. XRD analysis identified different phases in the flue dust, including dominant zincite, franklinite, and magnetite. Various concentrations of sodium hydroxide were tested to determine the optimal conditions for leaching. Characterization of the dust samples, before and after leaching, was performed using XRF and Wet Chemical methods. The results indicated that the optimal alkali concentration for selective leaching of zinc was found to be 4 M, yielding a recovery rate of 90 %. This indicates a promising approach for the recovery of valuable zinc from hazardous EAF dust, contributing to environmental sustainability and metal resource efficiency.
