This guest editorial introduces the special section on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), a significant area within the broader field of swarm intelligence. The objective is to highlight the advancements made in ACO, which draws inspiration from the foraging behavior of real ants. Through rigorous methodology, the editorial discusses how ACO has been effectively applied to various discrete optimization problems by mapping these problems to a construction graph. Here, artificial ants incrementally build solutions by moving through the graph based on pheromone trails, reflecting the successful pathfinding behaviors of natural ants. Key results indicate that ACO has shown promise in addressing complex combinatorial optimization challenges, including traveling salesman problems, quadratic assignment problems, and scheduling. The efficacy of ACO in dynamic routing within telecommunication networks is also acknowledged. This editorial emphasizes ACO's potential as a flexible and robust computational model, paving the way for more innovative applications and further research in the domain of optimization.
