Uranium mining and processing at Lagoa Real (Bahia, Brazil) initiated in 2000, prompting an investigation into its environmental repercussions. This study aimed to assess the hydrogeochemical quality of water resources in the area. Hydrogeochemical monitoring was conducted from 1999 to 2001, revealing generally satisfactory water quality inside and outside the mineralized zone, with no observed chemical contamination in waters designated for domestic use. Hydrochemical properties remained relatively unchanged after one year of uranium extraction compared to pre-mining conditions, though the brief duration of mining does not rule out potential future water quality variations. Leaching experiments served to elucidate the degradation processes of ore and waste, identifying sulfate as a significant contamination marker. Concerns were raised over potential environmental hazards linked to local climatic conditions, particularly the hot rainy season, which could facilitate acidification and salinization from destabilized tailings exposed to sulfuric acid. Additionally, radium-rich mineralization in the vicinity may pose risks through radon emissions. This research underscores the necessity for thorough assessments of toxic and radioactive element concentrations to evaluate background contamination before initiating uranium mining activities.
