Abstract

Language:

An urban area’s physical form and functions evolve with growing community demands and intensifying economic activity, often transforming public spaces into trading areas. This study examines how public spaces around Wamanggu Market in Merauke—specifically Jalan Paulus Nafi, Jalan Gor, and the market parking area—are utilized by traders and visitors, and what environmental attributes influence user behavior. Using a qualitative, rationalistic approach with behavior mapping (place-centered and person-centered), observations, documentation, and interviews, the research identifies behavior patterns and territorial use conflicts among different trader groups (e.g., car-based, cart-based, lesehan, and tent users). Results show that traders strategically occupy road shoulders, storefront edges, and portions of the parking area, driven mainly by visibility, proximity to crowds, and the lack or poor placement of formal stalls. These behavioral phenomena reveal key environmental attributes—such as accessibility, strategic location, and crowd flow—that shape the informal re-appropriation of public space for commercial purposes in the Wamanggu Market area.
