Abstract

Language:

The Skorpion Zinc integrated mine and refinery in Namibia has faced various challenges in optimizing the processing of zinc ore, particularly with the depletion of zinc oxide resources by 2017. This study aims to explore alternative processing routes for zinc sulphide concentrates from regional sources, given the existing production limitations of the Skorpion Zinc facility. We discuss the conventional roast-leach-electrowinning (RLE) process known for its efficient zinc extraction, which involves roasting to convert zinc sulphide to zinc oxide, followed by acid leaching and electrolysis. However, due to slower leach kinetics of zinc sulphides compared to oxides, a redesign of the current processing route is necessary. We review various hydrometallurgical processes including the sulphate route that has commercial application in zinc recovery, and consider integrating imports of zinc sulphide concentrates that can potentially enhance production capacity. Our findings indicate that while alternative processing routes exist, the economic feasibility is contingent upon market demands and technological adaptations needed for processing zinc sulphides effectively. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for the future viability of zinc production at Skorpion Zinc.
