This study investigates the recovery of platinum from the leaching liquor of spent petroleum catalysts using a solvent extraction method. The leaching of platinum was achieved through a mixture of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), while the effects of varying concentrations of HCl/H2O2, reaction temperatures, and pulp densities were evaluated. Complete extraction of platinum (Pt) and iron (Fe) was accomplished using Aliquat 336 with an optimal organic-to-aqueous (O/A) ratio of 1 across two extraction stages. High-purity solutions of platinum and iron were subsequently retrieved through scrubbing the loaded Aliquat 336 with dilute HCl and stripping with perchloric acid (HClO4). Furthermore, the process demonstrated regeneration of HCl in the raffinate via extraction with tri (2-ethylhexyl) amine (TEHA) followed by water stripping, allowing for its reuse in the leaching process. The study presents the optimum conditions for leaching, extraction, and stripping, along with a detailed mass balance of the constituents involved in the entirety of the recovery process.
