Poverty and ignorance underlie the demand for inferior information communication technology (ICT) products in developing countries in Africa. These inferior or obsolete electrical and electronic materials, including computers, damage shortly and are dumped as waste on agricultural soils and waterways. Lead (Pb) found in some of these materials can pollute water through leaching or absorption by crops and plants. Lead is a major health risk and is a hazardous chemical component of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), primarily found in the cathode-ray tubes of personal computers and as solders in other electronic appliances. This study involved sorting and recycling solder parts of WEEE by acid-precipitation to recover the metallic lead. Lead-containing powdered WEEE was dissolved in dilute trioxonitrate(V) acid (HNO3), and heating the solution of lead(II) trioxonitrate(V) produced solid lead(II) oxide (PbO) as a precipitate, which was then reduced to solid metallic lead through carbonation. The aim was to recover lead from e-waste to minimize environmental and health risks linked to lead toxicity. Users should be encouraged to deposit WEEE at designated locations for easy collection, alongside the establishment of a comprehensive Electrical-Electronic Equipment Policy Framework for effective WEEE disposal compliance among manufacturers and users.
