Abstract

Language:

This report presents an analysis of the technical and economic characteristics of electrolyzers for hydrogen production, aimed at understanding the current market status and future prospects. The objective is to provide development financing partners with insights into the financing landscape and risk mitigation instruments available for renewable hydrogen projects. The methodology includes the mobilization of financial resources for pre-feasibility and feasibility studies across ten priority countries, alongside a comprehensive assessment of electrolyzer system costs and their reduction trajectories. Key findings indicate that diverse electrolyzer technologies, including alkaline and proton exchange membrane, will be deployed, with the need for economic assessments using the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen approach highlighted. Furthermore, various priority projects have been identified, and the report emphasizes the importance of managing manufacturing overcapacity while ensuring reliable and bankable operation of newer electrolyzer solutions. This analysis aims to support informed decision-making among stakeholders in the renewable hydrogen sector.
