Lightweight materials, such as titanium alloys, magnesium alloys, and aluminium alloys, are characterised by unusual combinations of high strength, corrosion resistance, and low weight. However, some of the grades of these alloys exhibit poor formability at room temperature, which limits their application in sheet metal-forming processes. This review discusses emerging trends in single point incremental sheet forming (SPIFS) technology that enable enhanced formability and application of these materials. The objective is to summarize developments in SPIFS techniques and identify challenges and perspectives for future research. Methodologically, a comprehensive examination of current literature and case studies is presented, analyzing various approaches to improve formability, process parameters, and tool design. Results indicate that advancements in technology, such as optimized tool paths, hybrid forming methods, and advanced materials, significantly enhance the capability of SPIFS for lightweight metals. The findings underscore the significance of ongoing research in this domain to address limitations and establish effective practices for industrial applications.
