Abstract

Language:

This study focuses on the impact of nitrogen on the properties of duplex stainless steels (DSSs), specifically examining its role in enhancing strength and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. The objective is to quantify the austenite stabilizing effect of nitrogen during welding processes. A methodological review of existing literature and welding practices is conducted to assess nitrogen's behavior during fusion welding, where it is prone to evaporation due to heat. The findings reveal that nitrogen's potency as an austenite stabilizer is significantly higher than that of nickel, with varying estimates in literature indicating between 20 to 30 times greater effectiveness. Additionally, the study discusses how nitrogen contributes to preventing the formation of deleterious chromium-rich intermetallic phases, which can adversely impact the material properties. Practical recommendations are made to minimize nitrogen loss during welding, including the introduction of nitrogen into shielding gases. This research highlights the critical importance of nitrogen in maintaining the beneficial properties of DSSs during welding, thereby informing better practices in welding technologies for these materials.
