Abstract

Language:

The solubility of aluminum in NaF-A1F3-A1203 melts with various additives was investigated to understand its dependence on molar ratios and temperature. The objective of this study was to provide a reliable equation for the equilibrium concentration of dissolved aluminum in cryolitic melts and to present a model for dissolved aluminum species involved in the dissolution reaction. Employing experimental data and literature on the activities of NaF and A1F3 in cryolitic melts, a series of dissolution reaction models were evaluated for their fit to the solubility data. Results indicated that the solubility of aluminum increases with a higher NaF/A1F3 molar ratio and temperature while being negatively affected by the presence of additives such as A1203, CaF2, MgF2, and LiF. Specifically, the study confirmed that in NaF rich melts, aluminum predominantly dissolves as sodium species, while under commonly used cryolite ratios in aluminum electrowinning, AIF2- emerges as the main dissolved metal species. The findings contribute to resolving existing uncertainties in the functional dependence of dissolved aluminum and aid in optimizing the aluminum production process in cryolitic melts.
