This study investigates the characteristics of ore minerals associated with gold at the Prestea mine in Ghana, focusing on their relationships with base metal sulphides and sulphosalts. The objective is to understand the mineralization processes and the specific conditions under which gold occurs in the Early Proterozoic Birimian greenstones. Utilizing electron-microprobe analyses, the research identifies various types of tetrahedrites and pyrites present in the ore, revealing distinct stoichiometric compositions and associations with arsenopyrite and other sulphides. Key results indicate the presence of type I and type II tetrahedrites, with the former showcasing ideal stoichiometric characteristics, while the latter deviates from ideality. Three types of pyrites were recognized, characterized by their respective arsenic, cobalt, and nickel contents. The findings suggest that the gold mineralization underwent three paragenetic stages, predominantly influenced by hydrothermal fluid variations. It was observed that redox changes within the ore fluid, instigated by pressure fluctuations during geological processes, influenced the As/Ni ratios and led to observable zoning patterns in the ore. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of gold deposition mechanisms in this region.
