This study will examine how Invar (an alloy of 36% nickel and 64% iron) works in advanced manufacturing, especially with the use of Additive Manufacturing Technologies such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED). The extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of Invar is the most widely recognized feature; nonetheless, this article, through a comprehensive and in-depth study, examines the AM-related microstructural elements such as porosity, phase distribution, and texture anisotropy that influence the thermal and mechanical properties of Invar. In addition, the paper goes on to explore the potential benefits of post-processing interventions, e.g., heating and cryogenic treatments, in residual stress relief, microstructure refining, and stabilization of functional properties. Process, structure, and property correlations across various additive manufacturing (AM) processes have rarely been integrated, resulting in a lack of thermal stability guidelines that simultaneously preserve mechanical integrity. In addition to the fluctuations in CTE measurement along with anisotropy and defect issues, it seems that processing and characterization methods have to be standardized. This review, by making the most out of present-day studies, aims to address these concerns and also compares conventionally and additively produced Invar alloys. As a result, the principal findings indicate that although residual stress, porosity, and microstructural heterogeneity are contributing factors to the emergence of new problems, suitable AM parameters can facilitate the rise in near full density and CTE values close to those of wrought materials. Besides, post-processing has a considerable influence on the continuation of dimensional stability and mechanical performance, yet the actual changes brought about geographically are still largely determined by the original process.
