Abstract

Language:

This paper addresses the significant losses in copper extraction during the two main stages of copper production: melt for matte and convertizing. It highlights the limitations of treating these stages separately and proposes a novel approach that combines them into a unified process. Utilizing mathematical analysis and specially developed models, the study aims to maximize extraction efficiency by optimizing conditions during both stages. Key findings indicate that the efficiency at the melt for matte stage improves when producing poorer matte in copper content, while the opposite is true for convertizing where richer copper matte yields higher efficiency. The analysis reveals unexpectedly low values, around 40% for copper content in matte processed through convertizing under maximum extraction efficiency conditions, contrasting with current trends aiming for higher copper content. The study recommends managing slag removal periodically throughout the convertizing process to minimize metal loss and improve overall extraction efficiency. These insights contribute significantly to the understanding of copper metallurgy processes and offer potential pathways for increasing efficiency in copper production.
