This practical report provides an introductory overview of metallurgical science with a focus on the transformation of iron ore into steel sheets. It first defines metallurgy as the science and technology of extracting, refining, transforming, and utilizing metals, distinguishing between extractive metallurgy and physical metallurgy. The document then identifies the principal factors governing the choice of metallurgical processes, including ore type and grade, energy costs, required properties of the final metal, environmental considerations, and economies of scale.
