Abstract

Language:

In the realm of steel construction, the specification and selection of coatings are critical for ensuring the longevity and functionality of structures. This paper examines the evolution of coating specifications from rudimentary practices, reminiscent of ancient examples like Noah's ark, to more sophisticated standards required today. The objective is to elucidate the key factors influencing coating selection and to provide guidance for writing effective specifications. Methodologically, the paper references the AS/NZS 2312 standard and discusses various environmental influences on coating durability, emphasizing that conditions have drastically changed over millennia. Results highlight that while maximum durability against corrosion remains paramount, other factors such as environmental conditions, application methods, and compliance with health and safety regulations significantly impact the performance of coating systems. The findings underscore the importance of a well-crafted coating specification to ensure that steel structures can withstand contemporary challenges, and offer practical examples of specification clauses that can aid specifiers in the selection process. The insights presented are intended to be beneficial for professionals involved in the specification and application of coatings for steelwork in Australia and beyond.
