Le DMX512, acronym for "512 channels Digital Multiplex", is a widely adopted protocol for controlling lighting and stage animation devices in the performing arts. Prior to DMX, theater lighting was typically managed through the use of 0 to 10 V dimmers connected to one or multiple projectors in parallel. This lack of standardization prompted the creation of a new digital standard in 1986 by the Engineering Commission of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. The DMX512 protocol, based on the RS 485 standard, enables the control of up to 512 channels by assigning each a value between 0 and 255. The data is transmitted serially, with each device receiving the complete set of values (referred to as the DMX frame) and relaying this frame to the next device. The specification allows for a maximum of 32 devices to be connected in series on a single DMX line, with each DMX512 device capable of having between 1 and 16 channels, arranged in a manufacturer-defined order. This system facilitates precise control over various attributes such as intensity, color, and movement, significantly enhancing stage production capabilities.
