This report presents the results of cooperative research conducted by the Strength Subcommittee of the Japan Titanium Society, aiming to investigate the hardness of titanium bars in accordance with the current Japan Industrial Standard (JIS). The primary objectives were to determine the necessity of classifying hardness standards based upon various measurement methods and to explore the relationships between the data obtained from these methods. An extensive experimental procedure was implemented, involving tests on standardized specimens to confirm measurement accuracy and evaluate the reliability of different hardness measurement techniques, specifically Brinell (HB), Vickers (HV), and Rockwell (HRB). Results indicated a significant correlation between the hardness values yielded by the different methods, revealing that some measurement methods can be deemed more suitable for establishing standard values. The data support the argument for potential revisions of JIS to ensure consistency and accuracy in measuring titanium bar hardness, emphasizing the importance of standardization in industrial applications. Future research could focus on expanding these tests to additional titanium alloys or alternative hardness assessment approaches to further validate these findings.
