The effects of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) on both acclimated and unacclimated activated sludge were investigated in batch reactors. This study aimed to determine the inhibitory concentrations (IC 50) based on maximum specific growth rate, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency, and sludge activity. The results indicated that the IC 50 values for the unacclimated culture were 72, 60, and 47 mg l –1, respectively. Unacclimated cultures exhibited a marked decrease in COD removal efficiency even at low concentrations of 2,4-DCP, while acclimated cultures demonstrated a tolerance level of around 200 mg l –1, with 100% removal of 2,4-DCP observed at 148.7 mg l –1. Additionally, while the yield coefficients for unacclimated cultures spiked at high 2,4-DCP concentrations, acclimated cultures exhibited a linear decrease. Notably, cultures acclimated to 4-chlorophenol effectively utilized 2,4-DCP as their sole carbon source, outperforming those acclimated to 2,4-DCP itself, indicating the significance of prior exposure in enhancing biotransformation capabilities. This research contributes valuable insights into the biodegradation pathways of hazardous chlorophenols in wastewater treatment processes.
