The Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) represents a significant advancement in steel production, employing high-power electric arcs to melt recycled steel scrap into high-quality steel. The primary objective was to optimize the conversion of raw materials into liquid crude steel efficiently, followed by precise refinement in secondary steelmaking processes. The study utilized data on energy consumption and operational cycles of EAFs, revealing that the tap-to-tap cycle typically lasts between 45 minutes and 2 hours, affecting overall production capacity. Results showed that the total energy required for melting and superheating scrap ranges from 350 to 370 kWh per ton of steel produced, with actual reported electricity usage varying between 300 and 550 kWh/t. Notably, reducing the average electricity consumption by optimizing operational practices could lead to substantial global energy savings. The research highlights the importance of factors such as raw material composition and specific operating conditions in influencing energy efficiency and product output. By leveraging the EAF process, the steel industry can benefit from enhanced economic and environmental sustainability, given its capability to produce a wide range of high-quality steel products.
