The nonstationary behavior of a four-stage Kühni column operated in batch mode to the point of chemical equilibrium was investigated with the objective of determining a method of generating reliable engineering design data in an easy and cost-effective manner. Experiments were conducted under defined extraction and stripping conditions utilizing the liquid-liquid reactive system of ZnSO4, bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid, and n-heptane, as recommended by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. Various parameters, including rotor speed, organic-phase throughput, and extractant concentration for the extraction studies, alongside proton and extractant concentrations for the stripping studies, were evaluated. The closed-circuit method yielded satisfactory estimates of heights of transfer units essential for design purposes. Moreover, the findings indicated that hydrodynamic and mass-transfer parameters, derived from concentration profiles through the backflow model, displayed correlation, suggesting the necessity for additional information on drop size distributions to comprehensively assess individual parameters across the entire agitation spectrum.
