Abstract

Language:

This paper discusses the In-Situ Leaching (ISL) process, which has been effectively used for uranium extraction but presents challenges for gold and silver projects. The objective is to analyze the potential of ISL technology in gold deposit mining, particularly drawing on historical pilot programs like the one from the Ajax Mine in the 1970s. Methodologically, the paper presents a review of past experiences and identifies both technological hurdles and economic advantages related to ISL processes in mining low-grade gold deposits. Results indicate that while ISL offers low capital and operating expenditure potentials, the complexities involved in the metallurgy of gold leaching remain significant barriers that could jeopardize project viability. Despite slow progress in international applications of ISL for gold and silver, the ongoing developments may lead to breakthroughs in suitable metallurgy and project designs. Therefore, ISL is still considered in early stages for gold extraction, highlighting the need for diligent consideration of risks before investment.
