Abstract

Language:

This paper presents an alternative process for the conventional zinc electrowinning, which consists of a cell of two compartments separated by an anion exchange membrane. One compartment contains a zinc sulphate catholyte and sulfuric acid, while the anodic solution contains ferrous sulfate and sulfuric acid. By utilizing a membrane, the classical lead anode can be replaced, as can the main oxidation reactant of water, which is substituted by the ferrous ion to ferric ion reaction. This modification leads to significant energy savings in the overall process and effectively eliminates the classic problem of acid mist associated with electrowinning cells. The results indicate that the proposed process operates with 30% less cell potential in comparison to traditional electrowinning cells. This study contributes to the optimization of zinc recovery processes and emphasizes the potential for reduced environmental impact and operational costs.
