Column leach tests are essential for predicting recoveries and reagent consumption in nickel laterite heap leaching, typically lasting over 100 days which necessitates extensive monitoring and data analysis. To reduce the associated costs and time, we developed a small-scale hydrogeometallurgical laboratory test as a proxy for column leaching, conducting over 50 tests on various leach methods to compare predicted nickel recoveries, acid consumption, and leach kinetics. Our findings revealed a promising proxy test that achieved statistically significant correlations in recovery and acid consumption when compared to traditional column tests. The reliability of our small-scale tests was supported by subsequent column tests using new laterite ores. This geometallurgical proxy may enhance block model population, process selection during mine planning, and optimization and control during processing phases, ultimately addressing challenges posed by declining nickel prices and the necessity for cost-effective processing of low-grade nickel laterite ores.
