The Canterbury Region of New Zealand has undergone rapid and significant land use intensification over the last three decades resulting in a substantial increase of nitrate-nitrogen leached to the environment. In this article, we determined the nitrate grey water footprint of milk leached past the root zone to meet different receiving water nitrate standards. Our methodology involved analyzing land use data, nitrate concentrations, and their impact on freshwater resources. Results indicated that dairy farming practices contribute significantly to the nitrate grey water footprint in the region, suggesting an urgent need for management strategies to mitigate nitrate leaching. The findings underscore the importance of sustainable agricultural practices to protect water quality in the Canterbury Plains and similar regions worldwide.
