This study focuses on the fundamental characteristics of solid iron, which is predominantly composed of iron atoms and provides a basis for understanding steel. The objective is to elucidate the process and significance of grain structure, as determined through empirical experimentation. Methodologically, a pure iron bar was sectioned and polished to create a thin disk, which underwent an etching process using a mixture of nitric acid and methyl alcohol, commonly referred to as nital. Following etching, the sample was examined under an optical microscope at a magnification of 100×, revealing distinct iron grains and their boundaries. Results indicated that the average grain diameter was measured to be 125 microns, suggesting a grain size larger than that typically found in commercial irons. Additionally, the study outlines the crystalline structure of iron, characterized as a body-centered cubic (bcc) arrangement, commonly referred to as ferrite or alpha iron. Understanding the microstructural properties of iron is essential for advancing metallurgical knowledge and applications.
