Abstract

Language:

This research discusses improving the power factor in the Glenmore Sugar Industry electrical system. Variations in inductive loads can cause low power factors, which impacts large currents and high reactive power, potentially leading to blackouts. The low power factor is corrected with the effective Costum Power Devices, specifically Static Var Compensator (SVC) and Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM). Evaluations were carried out on load buses identified with low power factors. Simulation results indicate that the application of STATCOM can lead to a power factor increase, with reactive power values ranging from +4.9 to –0.994 MVAR, +1.6 to -0.32 MVAR, and +3.9 to -0.7875 MVAR. The lowest results of SVC showed an increase in power factor from 0.76 to 0.86 with reactive power ranging from +1.6 to –0.64 MVAR, and from 0.76 to 0.85 with values from +4.9 to –1.9 MVAR. The highest results exhibited an increase from 0.82 to 0.92 with reactive power values between +3.9 and –1.5 MVAR. Moreover, SVC application can reduce the reactive power usage on the main buses by 30% to 50%, thereby minimizing voltage drops by 1%.
