The extraction of CuII and FeIII from sulfate media by LIX 1104SM (a modified hydroxamic acid) has been investigated under various experimental conditions including temperature, aqueous pH value, and metal concentration. The results indicate that the extraction order is FeIII > CuII, and slope analysis of experimental data confirms that LIX 1104SM forms species of the nature Me2L3(HL) with copper. Stripping of copper is achieved using sulfuric acid solutions; however, FeIII requires hydrochloric acid solutions for stripping under the same conditions. The research highlights the effectiveness of LIX 1104SM for extracting these two elements from acidic solutions, suggesting its potential utility in removing FeIII and/or CuII from other base metals. Moreover, the separation of iron and copper can be accomplished through co-extraction paired with selective stripping, demonstrating its applicability in hydrometallurgical processes.
