This study investigates the differences in the transient zone extent between individual strands of an industrial six-strand tundish configuration to improve casting conditions. The objective was to propose optimal equipment modifications for the tundish working space, focusing on different baffle configurations for economical and practical implementation in steel mills. Employing both industrial measurements and mathematical modeling, industrial experimental data diagnosed the current state of the tundish and validated numerical simulations. The influence of varied baffle configurations on steel flow characteristics was mathematically modeled, resulting in plotted residence time distribution (RTD) curves and estimated flow shares for the tundish. Subsequent plant modifications based on numerical results were followed by additional measurements revealing that the introduction of baffles reduced the extent of the transient zone. The results demonstrated an increase in the share of dispersed plug flow alongside a decrease in dead volume flow, while the share of well-mixed volume flow remained relatively unchanged in the modified tundish.
