The main aim of this study is to explore alternatives to current power generation techniques and investigate ways to combat global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the installation of renewable and carbon capture technologies. Power generation is a key focus not only in developed countries but also in developing nations. Issues such as global warming, climate change, rising fossil fuel prices, and diminishing reserves have prompted the urgency to develop clean and reliable energy technologies. This report particularly analyzes alternative energy sources and the technological options available for current and future power generating systems. It finds that Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) with carbon capture and nuclear power are stable, reliable, and clean options for the baseload power generation amidst fluctuating gas and oil prices. Additionally, biomass and nuclear power exhibit the lowest greenhouse gas emissions during operation, followed by renewable technologies like solar and wind. Alternatives, including co-firing coal with biomass and implementing carbon capture technologies in conjunction with large offshore wind farms and solar PV panels, are identified as immediate measures to achieve emissions reductions.
