The titanium industry faces significant economic challenges, with the price disparity between titanium ingot and titanium dioxide amounting to approximately $9/kg titanium. This study aims to explore the electrowinning process of molten titanium from titanium dioxide as a promising solution to reduce costs associated with titanium production. A comprehensive review of existing methodologies highlights the complexities of the electrowinning process, including the constraints posed by high operating temperatures, specialized construction materials, and the chemical properties of titanium oxides during reduction. Primary titanium can be obtained from various feed materials, yet the selection influences both the quality and cost-effectiveness of the output. The results show considerable price variations for titanium products, with costs ranging from $18/kg to $440/kg depending on quality, emphasizing the necessity for a detailed techno-economic analysis of potential production routes. The current findings underline the urgent need for innovation in industrial practices that could streamline titanium production, ultimately leading to enhanced economic feasibility and market competitiveness. This study contributes to the evolving discourse on titanium production methods and showcases the need for further research into efficient technologies for low-cost titanium production.
