The study investigates the vertical distribution of minerals in a tailing impoundment of an abandoned manganese mine using X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and two sequential extraction methods. The objective was to assess the chemical stability of the site by analyzing the concentration and chemical states of heavy metals. The methodology involved sampling and testing mineral compositions to determine mass balance, finding that silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe) accounted for over 80% of the mass. Results indicated that these elements were constituents of clay minerals, oxides, and pyrite, confirming the site’s chemical stability. Furthermore, the two sequential extraction methods proved complementary, enhancing the analytical capability for sediments with diverse mineral content. The findings underscore the utility of combining sequential extraction methods for detailed characterization of heavy metals in environmental assessments of abandoned mine sites.
