Abstract

Language:

Khejri (Prosopis cineraria) is a crucial multipurpose tree found in the arid and semi-arid regions of India, recognized for its significant socioeconomic impact on communities, especially in the Indian Thar Desert. This chapter aims to explore the production practices for khejri, detailing its origin, distribution, and cultivation techniques. The methodology includes a comprehensive review of historical and contemporary agronomic practices associated with khejri, particularly its role within traditional agroforestry systems. The findings indicate that khejri not only improves soil fertility and supports sustainable land management but also provides essential food, fodder, and medicinal resources that enhance rural livelihoods. Additionally, the species is highlighted for its resilience against drought conditions, making it a key element in climate-resilient agricultural strategies. The harvesting and post-harvest management practices are also examined, revealing the importance of khejri pods in local diets and markets. Overall, this research underscores the significance of khejri in promoting ecological balance and supporting agricultural productivity in adverse environments.
