To assess the relation between family crisis and the onset of symptoms in family members, this study investigated 90 families in an outpatient facility to determine the elapsed time between the appearance of symptoms and two types of family crises: addition of a family member and loss of a family member. Results clearly indicated a significant and positive relationship between family developmental crises and symptom onset for each type of crisis. However, while these findings reveal a moderate strength of this relationship, it is important to note that the study is correlational and conclusions may not extend to other samples. The literature highlights the significance of developmental crises within families, which are viewed increasingly as periods of stress that can stimulate changes within the family system. These findings support a shift in focus from individual developmental stages to the family context, underscoring the relevance of interpersonal relationships in understanding psychosocial development. This study contributes to the understanding of how familial changes can impact the mental health of family members, offering insights for practitioners and researchers in the field of psychology.
