The resistance of steel to corrosion is obtained with a number of industrial processes based on Zn galvanization. However, these methods incur high costs due to Zinc plates and electrolytes, alongside the generation of hazardous wastewaters containing metals and acids. This study categorizes wastewaters from Zn galvanization into Mix of Rinse Water (MRW) and Spent Pickling Solutions (SPS). Typically, these are combined and treated through precipitation, leading to the production of substantial volumes of galvanic sludge with a low zinc content (<20 %), rendering recovery unprofitable. The experimental findings presented in this article indicate that utilizing spent pickling solutions (SPS) as a coagulant for treating process wastewaters, when combined with sodium hydroxide, results in the formation of precipitates with Zn contents exceeding 40%. This advancement significantly enhances the economic viability of zinc recovery and offers a sustainable approach to wastewater treatment in the galvanization industry.
