Steel castings are utilized across diverse industries, yet there exists a notable deficiency of accessible data regarding crack initiation and propagation characteristics essential for their fatigue design applications. This study aims to review existing literature concerning the initiation and propagation behaviors of cast steels, while also highlighting significant trends for design purposes. The findings suggest that the crack propagation rate and threshold data can be contextually aligned with established guidelines from flaw assessment procedures, indicating that standard values used for wrought and welded structures may effectively apply to steel castings as well. Furthermore, crack initiation data spanning various carbon, low-alloy, and high-alloy steels were integrated into life estimation methods primarily derived from wrought steels. A modification to an established regression relationship is presented, resulting in more accurate life predictions for cast steels. Lastly, the compatibility of this approach with a generalized fatigue assessment procedure is demonstrated, emphasizing its potential for integration within stress-based design frameworks.
