This chapter provides an in-depth examination of the Outokumpu flash smelting process, a pivotal technique in the extraction of copper from sulfide ores. The objective is to elucidate the mechanisms and efficiency of the Outokumpu flash smelting furnace compared to other methods, highlighting its advantages. Methodologically, the chapter describes the furnace's structure, including its major components such as the concentrate burner, reaction shaft, settler, uptake for gases, and tapholes for product removal. It emphasizes the operational conditions required for effective smelting, specifically detailing the materials used in construction for durability and performance. Results indicate that the Outokumpu furnace can smelt approximately 1000 tonnes of new concentrate daily, producing molten matte with a copper content of approximately 65%. Additionally, it reveals the efficiency of the water-cooled copper cooling jackets and the enduring functionality of the furnace structure, which remains operable despite some wear after several years. These findings underscore the Outokumpu method's significance in modern chemical engineering and mineral processing sectors.
