Abstract

Language:

The Albion Process™ offers a novel approach to the leaching of zinc from sulfidic concentrates through a combination of ultrafine grinding and oxidative leaching conducted at atmospheric pressure. This process enhances the recovery of base and precious metals by oxidizing sulphide minerals present in the concentrate. The methodology includes fine grinding of the concentrate to introduce strain into the mineral lattice, thereby lowering the activation energy required for oxidation and preventing passivation by leach products. The effectiveness of the ultrafine grinding process is evidenced by the operation of three Albion Process™ plants currently treating various concentrates, including zinc sulphide in Europe and refractory gold/silver in the Dominican Republic. The IsaMill™, a key component of the Albion Process™, supports efficient mineral processing with a compact design that allows for straightforward maintenance and a proven scale-up reliability from laboratory tests to commercial application. Results indicate that the Albion Process™ can significantly enhance the leaching rates and overall metal recovery, showcasing its potential impact in the mining industry.
