Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the microstructure and high-temperature strength of Fe-Al-Si(-Mo) alloys, focusing on the effects of multi-alloying with silicon, molybdenum, and either vanadium or tungsten. The primary objective was to analyze the contribution of various strengthening mechanisms to the overall mechanical performance during high-temperature deformation in compression. Employing experimental methods, the yield stress values were measured across different thermal treatments to assess the influence of heat treatment on material properties. Results indicate that the incorporation of vanadium or tungsten significantly enhances yield stress, particularly within the temperature range of 700–800 °C. Furthermore, long-term annealing at 800 °C resulted in a slight decline in yield stress due to precipitation of secondary phase particles. However, for the Fe28Al5Si2Mo1W alloy, this decrease was partially offset by the strengthening from fine incoherent precipitates, while short-term annealing at 1200 °C achieved peak yield stress values attributed to the formation of new phase nuclei. These findings underscore the critical role of alloying elements and heat treatment in optimizing the performance of iron aluminides for high-temperature applications.
