Abstract

Language:

Malanjkhand copper project, Madhya Pradesh, India, generates a lot of lean sulphidic ores containing chalcoprite (∼0.3% of copper) with traces of oxidized, semi-oxidized and secondary sulfides. The objective of the present study was to investigate the structural and chemical modifications of chalcoprite ore to enhance copper recovery. Through EPMA analysis, it was found that the granitic rock samples contain plagioclase feldspar, chlorite feldspar, and quartz as dominant constituents, with ore minerals sparsely distributed. The methodology involved subjecting the ore to heat treatment at 600°C under normal atmospheric conditions to facilitate changes in the mineral system's crystallographic and chemical nature. The results indicated a significant enhancement in copper recovery, achieving up to 98% within 60 days of progressive leaching. This improvement suggests that thermal activation can effectively alter the characteristics of chalcoprite ore, leading to efficient copper extraction from otherwise low-grade resources.
