Abstract

Language:

Carbon anodes are regularly replaced in Hall-Heroult cells due to their consumption by electrochemical reactions, which leads to local freezing of the bath and delays in production. This study investigates the potential of pre-heating anodes utilizing waste heat from off-gas and spent anode butts through numerical modeling in COMSOL and industrial measurements at the Alcoa Mosjøen smelter. Results show that anode core temperatures exceeded 150 ◦C and surface temperatures surpassed 250 ◦C when employing butts as a heat source. The research also involved analyzing frozen bath samples from both pre-heated and standard anodes using computer tomography (CT) to assess their morphology. The findings suggest that the proposed heating strategies significantly influence the characteristics of the frozen bath, providing insights into enhancing the operational efficiency of aluminum production processes.
