Abstract

Language:

This paper examines the significance of surface profile, also known as anchor pattern, in the context of blast cleaning and its implications for protective coating systems. The objective is to explore the measurement methods and standards associated with surface profiles, which are critical for quality control in coating applications. A comprehensive review of various field testing methods is conducted, including comparators, depth micrometer, replica tape, and DFT gauge, with attention to their ease of use, accuracy, and relevance to common profile ranges specified for coatings. The findings challenge the conventional belief that surface profile solely enhances coating adhesion or increases surface area; instead, the ability of profile to constrain shear stresses during drying and curing phases is emphasized as a critical factor. Among the testing methods, the replica tape emerges as the most favorable due to its low subjectivity, reasonable accuracy, and ability to provide a permanent record, albeit with caveats regarding proper usage for optimal results. This study consolidates the understanding of surface profile measurement and advocates for its careful application in painting and coating practices.
